Our methodology

Hyper Island Way

Our methodology focuses on the why as much as the how and the what, and on team collaboration instead of individual effort, in order to challenge participants to grow personally and professionally. We introduce new ways of thinking and learning for participants to develop themselves into lifelong learners. At Hyper Island, you will work and study following our distinctive methodology:

  • In this program, you will practice learning-by-doing and reflection as an active learning tool. Through regular feedback you will practice self-leadership, enhancing your ability to work effectively both as a team member and leader.
  • You will learn to create and run effective teams, navigate group dynamics and develop your skills in project management and leadership.
  • All course content is designed to meet the needs of today’s industry and is delivered by industry professionals at the forefront of their field.
  • You will be challenged to create solutions to real-world problems, practicing techniques of idea generation and business transformation.

There is no single, universal correct approach to innovation. Doing it well means having the right mix of methods and mindsets, customized to your own specific context, and learning through active experimentation.

Design Thinking

As the service industry matures, and companies move towards customer-centricity as a core objective of their business, an understanding of design becomes even more important. The focus of design, whether for products, services, businesses, websites, apps, or print, is always in problem-solving. This focus on problem-solving means that we should never design things for the sake of it.

Design is purposeful, and the design process supports you to reach a clear goal. This project will focus on investigating Design Thinking tools and processes. You will experience how to use these approaches to define problems and find solutions that create real value for people and organizations, looking into audiences, user journeys, and business needs, moving from strategic thinking to creative execution.

20 credits (10 ECTS credits)

Understanding People

We should be designing things for people, things that are useful, things that make people’s lives better or easier. Research coupled with an understanding of human behavior forms the foundation of any good design process. When we asked the industry about the one attribute that they want to see from graduates of this programme, they said empathy. This module is all about gaining the knowledge, tools, and techniques for gaining deep empathy with people through research; then drawing clear and powerful insights out of that research to guide a design process.

20 credits (10 ECTS credits)

Business Transformation

As digital technologies continue to disrupt every element of our lives, the effect that they have on the business world is massive. The birth and death rate of companies increases as old, established, slow corporations are ousted by young, agile startups. In this highly-connected, ever-changing world, what do businesses need to do to survive and thrive? In this project, you’ll explore the interplay between businesses, their customers, and their markets, and focus on the changes that businesses need to make in order to create and sustain value for all stakeholders.

20 credits (10 ECTS credits)

Managing Projects and Teams Understanding

how to run projects at an individual and team level is a crucial transferable skill. Assuming we have a great design, strong insights, a good business case, and enough money how do we put together the right team? How do we manage time and communication within that team? How can we work effectively with colleagues in a different country and different time zones? This project takes place during all of the taught parts of the programme and is built on your project and professional work.

20 credits (10 ECTS credits)

Experience Design

This is the essence of the programme: learning how to design and develop innovative, useful experiences, products, and services for people and businesses. In a constantly changing industry it’s really important to have an understanding of the components that make up a particular field. You’ll move quickly from theory to practice, trying out a diverse range of methods and approaches, learning how to test concepts, refine them, and work with other professionals to get them built. You’ll look at a whole range of technologies, and choose the ones most appropriate to meeting a design challenge. Understanding and managing the journey of a design, from idea to production.

40 credits (20 ECTS credits)

Industry Research Project

This is your opportunity to design your own project based in the workplace. Do the research, state assumptions and formulate hypotheses, test them, make conclusions, engage with other professionals, create something original and innovative, leave your mark on the industry. This is a period of work practice, informed by deep research, you will find problems, test solutions, build prototypes, and make conclusions. The area of research and practice is up to you to define. It’s an industry research project, which means that it must take place in the industry, in some kind of workplace anywhere in the world. It’s a research project, which means that you must do a significant amount of investigation, both desk-based, and through the first-hand experience. You will be supported by a supervisor during this project to help you shape your work.
