What you will learn

We believe innovation is all about unlocking and applying creativity to solve problems that matter. In other words, developing new ideas that create value and tackle important challenges. And while many find it mystifying, we know that with the right mindset and toolkit, anyone can practice innovation.

You will learn how to apply a range of innovation tools to create value and solve problems. From understanding users to generating ideas, crafting creative concepts and testing prototypes, you will leave this course ready to lead innovation in any team.

By the end of this course you will be able to:


  • Understand the theory and practice of innovation processes, from conducting research to gaining traction for new ideas.

  • Design and run collaborative innovation processes using a wide range of approaches.

  • Select and apply appropriate tools, methods and processes to enable innovative ideas to be developed and implemented.

Seven modules

Demystifying innovation

In this pre-course module, we break down the buzzword and seek to answer the question: how should we think about innovation? You will explore a range of innovation frameworks and reflect on what you can learn and apply from each. You will also consider how you currently innovate and ways you can apply the course to your workplace.

You’ll cover, Introduction to the course. What is innovation? Defining the word. Key innovation theories and frameworks. Reflecting on how you currently innovate. Exploring ways you can apply the course.

Opportunities to innovate

Innovation starts with doing your research. You will explore a range of methods and techniques for opportunity-spotting, user research and generating insights. You will learn how to cut through the noise and quickly gather a rich set of data, sort and synthesize it, and ultimately frame your innovation challenge in a clear and compelling way.

You’ll cover; A user-centric approach to research. The hunch: Identifying your starting point. Tools and methods for user research. Analysis & Synthesis: From data to insights. How to frame an innovation challenge.

Ideation & concepting

To solve your innovation challenge you need to generate creative solutions. Here you will learn methods for collaborative brainstorming, sorting and clustering your ideas, and packaging early-stage solution concepts. You’ll also learn some basics of facilitation to boost your ability to lead creative processes with your team or groups of stakeholders.

You’ll cover; Understanding creativity: theory and practice. Essentials of group facilitation. Principles and methods for idea generation. Cluster, filter, select: From quantity to quality. Shaping early solution concepts.

Prototyping & testing

Time to create! In this module you will learn how to bring your ideas to life quickly and test them with real users in order to learn and refine the solution to truly meet the problem. You’ll learn tools and approaches for rapid prototyping and simple techniques for effective user-testing and evaluation.

You’ll cover; Prototyping: learning by doing. Design the test: what do you want to learn? Problem-Solution fit. Simple methods for rapid prototyping. Introduction to user testing.

Building the MVP

Once you’ve landed on a solution that meets your innovation challenge, it’s time to launch a minimum viable product (MVP). Here you will discover how different business models and implementation approaches can impact the survival of your idea and explore methods for proving it’s value and market fit. You will discover how users respond to your solution and explore how to strategically evolve it to meet their needs.

You’ll cover; MVP design and application plan. Using MVP’s for strategic iterative development. How to pivot to meet and create demand. Value proposition design.

Gaining traction

Any solution is only as strong as its execution. How will you tell the story of your solution and successfully introduce and integrate within your context? Here you will explore ways to propel your solution forward, engaging supporters along the way. You’ll apply simple growth hacking techniques for any context, and learn about setting goals and defining methods for measuring progress.

You’ll cover; Packaging and communicating your solution. Applying a growth hacking mindset and tools. Defining your goals and success criteria. Methods and metrics for measuring progress.

Continuous innovation

Innovating does not end here. This module is all about how to cultivate an environment in which your innovation can continue to flourish. You will learn how to create a roadmap for sustainable development. Through reflecting and capturing key learnings, you will explore ways to embed the mindset for innovation within your ecosystem to support continuous innovation long after the course.

You’ll cover; Fostering a culture for continuous innovation. Planning for success, how to recognize and respond to barriers and opportunities. Reflecting and capturing learnings to apply sustainable innovation.

Impact your organization 

This course is designed with a learning-by-doing approach. Each week, we will introduce new processes, tools and techniques and challenge you to try them out in real-time in your workplace.

This works especially well if you have opportunities you can apply the course content to in your organization. Applying what you learn in real-time means you can develop yourself and create immediate value for your organization in parallel.

There is no single, universal correct approach to innovation. Doing it well means having the right mix of methods and mindsets, customized to your own specific context, and learning through active experimentation.

Format

What you'll be doing

This 6-week online course is designed to be flexible to your schedule. The majority of the course content and tasks are available for you to go through any time you choose during the week, with the exception of a weekly one-hour webinar session which is scheduled on Tuesdays 15:00-16:00 CET. Expect to spend 5-7 hours per week on your learning, although often this can be integrated into your existing day to day work.

The Hyper Island approach is different from a traditional online course. We combine hands-on learning in your workplace with a fast-paced online environment to create a powerful experience that truly pays off.
