3 ways to become a great leader in 2019
How well do you know your team? Have you experienced a lack of engagement from your staff? Do you struggle to get through to unmotivated team members? Do you suffer from high employee turnover? If so, it’s time to reevaluate your leadership skills to reflect the evolving times we live in.
The Future of Work Needs Great Leaders but what does that mean in 2019?
Begin by asking your staff or colleagues what they think are the qualities of a good leader. If nothing else, it’ll get them talking and sharing experiences. Broadly speaking, most would agree that having a clear vision, emotional intelligence and openness are important.
1. Get 20/20 vision
Technology is rewriting the rules of business and evolving customer expectations, so having a clear vision is a must. One way to get clarity is through Individual Reflection – a simple technique that can help you pick apart complex experiences. You’ll learn that successes can be repeated or improved, while failures provide learning opportunities.
Another important self-leadership tool is feedback. Here is a Feedback Map you can use to to deliver feedback to your staff that is clear and specific. It will help you visualize the connections between individuals (and ways to improve them) for more effective teamwork.

2. Develop your emotional intelligence
Forget artificial intelligence. Leaders need emotional intelligence. Team development holds enormous potential for innovation and future-proofing. Leaders should be aware of ways to increase collaboration through better understanding of human needs and behaviors. Leaders need to learn not only the theoretical background related to team development and group dynamics, but also acquire actionable methods and tools to use in developing these areas. You can get all of these in the Hyper Island Way course.
“We need leaders who are emotionally intelligent, and able to model and champion co-operative working. They’ll coach, rather than command; they’ll be driven by empathy, not ego. The digital revolution needs a different, more human kind of leadership”.
3. Be open to collaborative learning
The willingness to collaborate and grow together as a team is a question of culture creation and leaders are the ones that need to not only steer workplace cultures but also review and correct them when they begin to falter. You can get insights into collaborative learning by taking the Hyper Island Way course.
